Every year I begin my classes with a Substitute Masterpiece Zone Lesson. This is an art lesson that I begin with the students on the first day and then tuck it away. The only time the lesson is pulled out is when there is a substitute teacher. I have had a lot of positive feedback on this idea.
My substitute teachers love it because they already know what they will be teaching when they come in to sub for me. They also know that they will not have to search for different supplies for each grade. The students love it, because they know it is a special assignment that they only get to work on with a substitute teacher. It also gives them a break from the project we are currently working on.

4 Class Periods
Day 1: Have students trace the profile of their shoe. Add a leg. (I did this step with my students).
Day 2: Create a horizon line in the composition.
Add details to the shoe (look at shoe for reference). If students are not wearing the same shoe, they should examine the shoe they are wearing and think about the details they could add on their drawing: laces, patterns, straps, mesh, logos, stitching, etc.
Outline drawing with sharpie marker.
Color shoe with colored pencils.
Day 3: Discuss different types of line. Add crazy patterns and designs to sock.
Day 4: Color sock with markers.
